lista lunes: febrero (Black History Month, Winter Olympics, Valentine's Day & more for Spanish class)

Are you stuck in a winter rut? It has been below freezing for a full month, so my students and I are going stir crazy. It is time to mix it up in the classroom to try and bring the fun back. Here are some fun ways to bring in culture and fun this February.

Black History Month

lista lunes: febrero (Black History Month, The Olympics, Valentine's Day & more for Spanish class)

The month of February is the perfect time to celebrate Afro-latinos during Black history month. I know that technically it is celebrating African Americans, but as a Spanish teacher, I am trying to expose my students to the variety of ethnicities through the Spanish speaking world. My favorite way to introduce culture is always with music, so I created a new slideshow to show and celebrate afro-latino musical artists. It has classics like Celia Cruz and Susana Baca, mixed with current hit makers like Choquibtown and Tego Calderon.

Below are some other great resources for Black History Month as well.

The Olympics

lista lunes: febrero (Black History Month, The Olympics, Valentine's Day & more for Spanish class)

Friday, February 9th to Sunday, February 25th the world will be coming together with the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. I personally LOVE the Olympics and get so wrapped up in the heartfelt stories and the positive way it brings the world together. The last Winter Olympics I was home on maternity leave and watched hours of live ice skating with a sleeping baby on my chest (since my newly 4 year old would only sleep that way at the time).

Any worldwide event is the perfect way to bring in culture from the Spanish speaking world. I am so excited for the #authres that will pop up in Spanish during the Olympics such as tweets, videos, news stories and more. I am sure there will be many more resources to add as the games begin. For now, here are a few if you want to get a head start.

(especially great for younger grades in Spanish!)

Valentine's Day

lista lunes: febrero (Black History Month, The Olympics, Valentine's Day & more for Spanish class)

I have quite a few previous blog posts on Valentine's Day in Spanish class

Here are my resources for Valentine's Day as well.

This has 3 weeks of short class starter or brain breaks relating to all things Love day. They could also be combined for a mini unit.

If you would like to just squeeze in a short 20-30 minute authentic interpretive reading about Valentine's day this activity would be perfect for novice learners.

Here is my new seasonal bulletin board as well!

(Bonus) Wooly Week!

If you have not jumped on the Sr. Wooly train yet and teach Spanish, now is the time. "Wooly week" will start February 12th and you can expect new video releases, contests, prizes and all things Wooly. In the meantime, check out how I use Sr. Wooly in my Spanish classes

(Bonus 2) Carnaval!
This year Carnaval fall February 9-14. When I taught at a Catholic school, this was a perfect time for a cross curricular church festival. A few years ago, I posted about resources for the Carnaval de Barranquilla, but I will be on the look out and share any #authres I see this year!

What are you using to get you out of a Winter funk? Please share!
