About Me

Meet Allison

I'm Allison, the teacher and mama behind Mis Clases Locas. I did not grow up speaking Spanish, but took four years starting in 8th grade and went into college as a "deciding" major. I took the Spanish placement test at orientation, since I figured it could not hurt. Somehow I was lead to become a Spanish teacher and here we are.

I created this blog my second year teaching after discovering resources online that gave me confidence as a facilitator of language acquisition. I have always been my own language department and I wanted to try and give back even a tiny bit to compensate for all of the resources that saved my time and sanity as a new teacher and mom without time to plan. I wanted to show my growth as a teacher, including failures in the crazy mess that is teaching a language. I want my readers to know that language learning is messy, but your students can learn a new language, and you can save yourself time by not reinventing the wheel.

Teacher Mom Life
Becoming a mom has completely changed my views on teaching as well as work/life balance. My wonderful husband & I have two young sons and my plan is to teach them Spanish as well. Working with them has taught be so much about natural language acquisition, but also about time management and how precious my time at home is. I want to save other busy teachers time, by providing high quality resources to save you time. I love to travel and have been to 16 countries, including Spain for both a semester and a summer, and Mexico four times.

Teaching Spanish
I have learned so much the past few years and would love to be able to assist those who are just starting out as well. I am in my 7th year of teaching all levels of Spanish to grades 7-12. My goal is to create a positive and supportive environment where language can naturally flow. I work to focus on learning language as a whole and focusing on what students CAN do.

My curriculum is a mix of comprehensible input strategies with story units, high frequency verb units, music, novel units, films, and lots of movement in my deskless class. I am in the lucky position that as a #deptof1, I have ultimate freedom to try new things. As the name
states, this means it can get a little crazy at times, but please know I am just a normal
teacher trying new things and sometimes falling flat on my face. Please know I support all teachers who are trying their best, despite whatever method you chose to use.

  1. I found your blog via Pinterest and I was so excited to read that you had attended IWLA and that you hope to attend IWLA and CSCTFL this year. That is an excellent goal. I hope it works out! Suggestions for your principal. What are your building goals? When the program is determined, I'm still working on it, highlight all of the sessions that you are interested in that relate to your goals, particularly workshops. There is a listing of those online already. I have been attending IWLA since I was a student at UNI in the 80's. ;) You mentioned that you would like to present this year. Have you submitted a proposal yet? We are still accepting them. Please submit something. It seems to me that you would have a lot to share! I hope to see a session proposal from you soon. Have a great school year - it seems clear to me that you will. Keeka

  3. Hi Allison,
I’ve just come across your blog and thought I’d reach out.
My name is Camille and together with some friends we run a flashcard app. It’s called VocApp and offers a number of innovative features: creating flashcards with your voice or from a text (e.g. song lyrics), matching words with pictures and pronunciation recordings, and many others. All the functionalities are free, but we have a few paid Spanish-English courses which I’d gladly share with you and your students without charging anything if you wanted to give VocApp a go and maybe write about it on your website or post a link in one of the sections of your blog.
    Here’s a sample set I’ve made for you: https://vocapp.com/on-the-road-en-esp-flashcards-201209
Thank you for taking the time to read this message. I’ll be looking forward to hearing from you!
    All the best,
    Camille
