Why didn't I think of that?!! I numbered each of my books, and then I also sprung (from my own $) for book pockets and library checkout cards. I printed on address labels: the name of the book and a space for the number. I was lucky enough to get a TA this year, so my TS glued all the pockets into the books and put the cards in. <br /><br />Now when we read the novel in class the kids put their name on the library card, and I collect them. When they return the novel in good condition, I highlight their name in green, so I know I saw the book, and put the card back in the book for next time. It's a bit of work on the front end, but well worth it. I also did this for my classroom library books as well.
